How to Get Monetized on X: 2026 Rules and Payout Reality
How to get monetized on X after Revenue Sharing ended: current Original Content Rewards requirements, how payouts work and an organic plan to qualify.

To get monetized on X in 2026, you apply to the Original Content Rewards program, which replaced Creator Revenue Sharing in September 2026. You need an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, at least 500 verified followers, 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days (replies excluded), an account in good standing, age 18 or over, a supported country, original content, and X's approval.
Many pages ranking for this query still quote the Twitter-era rules (15 million impressions) or the 2024 rules (5 million), and most payout screenshots come from formulas X no longer uses. This guide covers the current requirements from X's help center, how payouts are calculated, why bought engagement does nothing here, a 90-day organic plan, and Subscriptions as a second income stream.
Facts in this guide were checked in October 2026. X changes these rules often, so treat the official help page as the final word and check it before you make a decision that costs money.
Can you still get monetized on X in 2026?
Yes, but through a different program than most guides describe. X stopped accepting new enrollments into Creator Revenue Sharing on August 7, 2026, kept paying existing members through September 7, 2026, and began rolling out applications for the new Original Content Rewards program on September 8, 2026, starting with existing Revenue Sharing members, according to the Creator Revenue Sharing help page.
Former members who already completed ID verification and connected a payout method do not need to repeat those steps. If your monetization was paused for a past policy violation, you cannot enroll in Original Content Rewards for now.
The reason for the switch matters for how you plan. TechCrunch's report on the change carried X's own description of the old system as "misaligned", and coverage such as Complex's write-up framed the new program as a move against engagement bait and recycled content. In practice, the new rules reward one thing above all: original posts seen by paying users in the Home Timeline.
The official page gives no date for when every new account can apply, since the rollout began with former members. If you were never enrolled, check the Original Content Rewards section of Creator Studio to see whether the application is open to you.
What are the requirements to get monetized on X?
The requirements to get monetized on X are listed on the Original Content Rewards help page, and you must meet all of them at the moment you apply. Here they are in one place, with what each one means in practice.
| Requirement | Official wording, summarized | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Based in a country where the program is available | Check the country list on the help page before you invest time; availability is set by X and can change |
| Age | 18 or older | Applies to you, not the account |
| Account standing | No history of repeated Monetization Guidelines or Terms violations | Past strikes can block you even with good numbers |
| Account type | Personal or Business account; political and government organization accounts are not eligible | Campaign, party and government accounts are out |
| Subscription | Active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, or a Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription | Premium Basic is not listed, so it does not qualify you |
| Impressions | At least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, replies excluded | Only verified viewers count, and only on your own posts |
| Followers | At least 500 verified followers | Total follower count is irrelevant |
| Content | Actively post original content as X defines it | Reposts, clips and aggregation do not count |
Meeting every line does not guarantee entry. X reviews each application and notifies you of the result. If you are rejected, you get one appeal, and if that fails you can reapply after 42 days as long as you still meet the requirements.
Once you are in, the rules keep applying: stay subscribed, keep posting original content, do not tamper with the payout system or algorithms, do not use bots or tools to generate engagement, and do not repeatedly ask people to like, reply, bookmark, follow or repost. Violations can remove you temporarily or permanently.
The path from a fresh account to a first payout has seven gates, and each one depends on the one before it.

How the X monetization rules changed since the Twitter era
X has run three different creator monetization programs since 2023, which is why so much advice online contradicts itself. If a guide quotes 15 million impressions, it is describing the 2023 launch rules. If it quotes 5 million organic impressions, it is describing the program that closed in September 2026.
| Period | Program | Impression threshold | Follower threshold | What drove payouts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 launch (Twitter Blue era) | Ads Revenue Sharing | 15 million impressions in 3 months | 500 followers | A share of ad revenue from ads shown in replies to your posts |
| Late 2024 to September 2026 | Creator Revenue Sharing | 5 million organic impressions in 3 months | 500 verified followers | Engagement and impressions from Premium users, weighted by viewer tier and format |
| September 2026 onward | Original Content Rewards | 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days, replies excluded | 500 verified followers | Qualified impressions on original content |
The 2023 row reflects the rules as widely reported at launch; the 5 million figure is still visible on X's retired Revenue Sharing page. The headline number dropped tenfold, but the new one is stricter about what counts: only verified viewers, only the Home Timeline, never replies.
Compare our guides on TikTok's Creator Rewards Program and YouTube's monetization requirements and a pattern appears: platforms are paying for original work rather than raw reach. X's shift mirrors YouTube's reused content policy update for Shorts.
How many followers and impressions do you need to get monetized on X?
You need 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within the last 90 days. Your total follower count and your total impression count do not appear anywhere in the requirements, which is the single most misunderstood part of X monetization.
A verified follower is a follower with a checkmark, which in practice mostly means people who pay for Premium. An account with 40,000 followers and 300 checkmarks among them does not qualify. An account with 2,000 followers that happens to attract founders, developers, analysts and other people who pay for Premium might.
The impression rule has three filters stacked on top of each other:
- Verified viewers only. An impression from a non-verified user does not count toward the 500,000.
- Home Timeline only. X specifies Home Timeline impressions. Views from search, profile visits or embeds are not described as counting.
- No replies. Impressions on your replies are explicitly excluded, even if a reply takes off.
To see what this means for your posting volume, run your own numbers. Say 15 percent of the people who see your posts in the Home Timeline are verified (this is an illustrative figure, X does not publish the share of Premium viewers, and yours could be much higher or lower). To collect 500,000 verified impressions in 90 days, you would need around 3.3 million Home Timeline impressions in total, or roughly 37,000 per day on your original posts. At 5 percent verified, the total jumps to 10 million.
Two creators with identical reach can be months apart on eligibility because one writes for an audience that pays for Premium and the other does not.
One inconsistency worth flagging: the eligibility threshold counts impressions from "verified users", while the payout definition explicitly includes Premium Basic subscribers, a tier that has historically had no checkmark. X has not clarified this, so do not plan around either reading.
Why bought followers and impressions will not get you paid on X
Bought followers and bought impressions do not help you get monetized on X, and they can get you removed from the program. X's definition of qualified impressions excludes "paid, promoted, or artificially generated impressions" as well as fraudulent ones, and the continuous eligibility rules ban using bots or software to generate likes, follows, views, comments or shares.
This applies beyond the monetization program. The X Rules prohibit platform manipulation, which covers buying or selling engagement, and that sits on top of the monetization-specific bans. We sell X services, including followers and views, and we will be plain about it: if your goal is a monetization payout, there is no version of a purchase that moves you toward it.
The mechanics explain why. Purchased followers rarely carry checkmarks, so your verified count does not move. Purchased views are not Premium users scrolling their Home Timeline, so they are not qualified impressions. You would pay for a number the program ignores while creating the pattern its reviewers look for. The same applies to the small sample on our free Twitter views page: it shows how ordering works and does nothing for eligibility, so keep it off any account in or applying to the program.
Paid services mostly fit accounts that are not chasing payouts, such as a business account that wants a launch post to look less empty. Even then, buying engagement breaks X's rules, and you should weigh that first. If you still want to see what exists, our X and Twitter SMM panel lists each service with its start time, speed, refill period and cancellation terms, and the refill guide explains why counts drop afterward.

What counts as original content on X?
Original content on X is anything you personally wrote, filmed, designed or produced that reflects your own voice, perspective or expertise. X explicitly says commentary is at the heart of the platform: reacting to news, breaking down a story or adding context others lack all count, as long as your contribution is the main value.
X lists four types that do not count as original:
| Content type | Example of what fails | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Copied content | Reuploading a viral clip downloaded from X or elsewhere | Post media you made, or link the original and add analysis |
| Minimally modified content | Changing a word, adding a filter, speeding up a video, a text overlay | Transform it with your own breakdown, footage or data |
| Aggregated content | "Top 10 posts this week" compilations | Write the takeaway yourself and cite sources |
| Cross-platform reposts | Reposting someone else's TikTok or YouTube clip | Only cross-post material you created |
Content is also ineligible if it is sexually explicit or harmful, posted by automated means, misleading, carries a helpful Community Note, or violates copyright. One rule surprises people: content exclusively about monetization coaching or maximizing payouts is ineligible, so a feed of "how I made money on X" posts cannot earn.
Since March 3, 2026, posting AI-generated videos of an armed conflict without an AI disclosure means a 90-day suspension from the program, and repeat violations end payments permanently. Originality and copyright are separate checks: a post can count as original and still break X's intellectual property rules.
How much does X pay creators?
X does not publish a pay rate, so nobody outside X can tell you what 1,000 impressions are worth. What X does publish is how payouts are calculated: eligible creators earn based on qualified impressions, which are unique impressions from Premium users (Premium Basic, Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business) in the Home Timeline, where at least half of the post was visible on screen.
Repeat views from the same account count once, and paid, promoted, artificial or fraudulent impressions do not count. A post that goes viral among non-subscribers can earn far less than its view counter suggests.
The retired Revenue Sharing page said Premium+ viewers may carry more value than Basic ones and that formats may be weighted differently. The new page does not repeat those weightings, so treat them as history, not current rules. Payouts arrive every two weeks, with a $30 minimum.
The honest answer to "how much will I make" is to measure it after a few cycles: divide your payout by your qualified impressions and multiply by 1,000. With invented numbers to show the arithmetic (not a real X rate), $60 on 2 million qualified impressions is $0.03 per thousand. Track it over several cycles before budgeting around it.
Ignore payout screenshots from 2023 and 2024: they came from formulas X has since replaced (the 2023 one twice).
How to reach the X monetization thresholds organically: a 90-day plan
The organic route to X monetization is to build a verified audience first and impressions second, because verified followers are the people who generate qualified impressions in the first place. The 90-day window means you need consistency over a full quarter, not one viral week.
Here is a plan you can start on Monday. The cadences are suggestions, not X rules.
- Audit your audience first. Open your last 50 followers and count the checkmarks. If almost none have one, no posting schedule will fix that; look for a professional, technical or enthusiast angle on your topic.
- Decide when to subscribe. You need a qualifying Premium plan when you apply, and X lists no minimum subscription period beforehand. Months away from 500 verified followers, it is a cost rather than a requirement, although paid tiers also unlock features such as longer posts, which is why many creators subscribe early.
- Use replies for discovery, not for the count. Reply impressions are excluded, but replies are still the fastest way for a small account to reach a bigger one's audience. Reply early to niche accounts whose followers likely pay for Premium, add what the post missed, and make your pinned post a reason to follow.
- Post original standalone posts daily. These earn Home Timeline impressions: a sharp observation, an analysis with your own numbers, a chart you made. Two to four strong posts a day beat ten weak ones.
- Write threads whose first post stands alone. The opening post is what appears in the Home Timeline, so it must be a complete idea on its own.
- Use Articles for depth. X lists Articles alongside posts, video and images as rewardable content, and a long-form breakdown of something you know well is as original as content gets.
- Co-host Spaces with peers. Spaces are live audio rather than posts, so they are unlikely to add Home Timeline impressions, but they introduce you to other creators' most engaged listeners. Pin a post during the Space so listeners have something to follow.
- Join or run a Community. X does not say whether Community posts count as Home Timeline impressions, so treat Communities as a follower tool, not an impression source.
- Never ask for engagement. X's rules bar repeatedly asking people to like, reply, bookmark, follow or repost, so a habit of "like and repost if you agree" is a listed reason for removal. The simplest policy is not to ask at all.
- Measure weekly. Check eligibility in Creator Studio, count new verified followers, and note which posts performed. Our guide to engagement rate and social media metrics gives you a cleaner way to compare posts.
A simple timeline helps you see whether you are on pace:
| Weeks | Focus | Signal you are on track |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Audience audit, profile rewrite, daily niche replies | New followers include checkmarks |
| 3 to 6 | Daily original posts, weekly thread, first Space | Verified followers grow every week |
| 7 to 10 | Double down on what worked, first Article | Verified impressions above 5,500 a day, to make up for slower early weeks |
| 11 to 13 | Hold quality, check eligibility, prepare payouts | Both thresholds met, or a steady trend toward them that tells you how many more weeks you need |
The 5,500 figure is simply 500,000 divided by 90, the average daily pace across the whole window. If your first weeks run below it, you need to run well above it later or keep going past week 13. For a new account, treat this plan as a starting rhythm, not a promise of eligibility in one quarter. Because the window rolls, a quiet month drags the total down, so steady output beats bursts.
Where to find monetization on X and how to apply
Monetization on X lives in Creator Studio, where X says you can check your Original Content Rewards eligibility at any time. Your account's monetization settings are also reachable at x.com/settings/monetization.
Once you meet the requirements, the process looks like this:
- Confirm your subscription. Make sure Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business (or a qualifying plan on The X Subscription) is active.
- Open Creator Studio and select Original Content Rewards. Check each eligibility item and fix anything missing before you apply.
- Submit the application. X describes it as a quick application, followed by a review.
- Wait for the decision. X notifies you of the outcome. If you are rejected, you can submit one appeal.
- Set up payouts. In the US, payouts go through X Money, and you need an active X Money account. Outside the US, you connect a Stripe payout account and complete identity verification through Stripe.
- Keep posting original content. Payouts arrive every two weeks if your balance is at least $30 and your account and content still meet the program's requirements.
If you run several profiles, note that each X Money account links to only one X account, and each person can have only one X Money account, tied to their Social Security Number.
How long does it take to get monetized on X?
Getting monetized on X takes at least as long as it takes to collect 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions inside a rolling 90-day window and 500 verified followers, plus the review time after you apply. For an established account with a Premium-heavy audience that can be immediate. For a new account, several months is a realistic expectation.
Impressions older than 90 days fall out of the count, so you cannot bank last year's viral month. X does not publish how long review takes. A rejection means one appeal, then a 42-day wait. And with biweekly payouts and a $30 minimum, a small account may wait more than one cycle for its first payment.
There is no fast lane: any "verified follower pack" or impressions package runs straight into the artificial engagement exclusions.
Subscriptions: the second revenue stream on X
Subscriptions let your followers pay you a monthly fee for exclusive content, and they are a separate income stream from Original Content Rewards. Where the rewards program pays you from X's side based on impressions, Subscriptions are paid by your audience, which makes them more predictable once you have a loyal core.
X reworked Subscriptions in March 2026. TechCrunch reported that the update added exclusive threads and shareable cards, and moved the subscriber-only label to sit directly below a post's content, where it can be added after posting.
We could not confirm the current Subscriptions eligibility thresholds and revenue split from an official page while checking this guide, and they have changed before. Check the Subscriptions section in Creator Studio for the terms that apply to your account today.
Subscriptions work when the benefit fits in one sentence. Say you post daily market notes for small business owners: free posts build reach and rewards eligibility, while subscribers get a weekly deep dive and Q&A threads. Vague "bonus content" rarely converts. And remember income X does not pay you, such as brand deals, affiliate links, consulting or your own product, which often matters more for mid-size accounts than platform payouts.
Is it hard to get monetized on X?
Getting monetized on X is moderately hard, and the bottleneck is attracting verified users, not attention. The threshold is a tenth of the old one, but it ignores non-Premium viewers and replies, and it comes with an originality review. Here is where different accounts usually get stuck:
| Your situation | Likely bottleneck | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Large account, mostly non-verified audience | Verified followers and verified impressions | Shift some content toward topics Premium users follow |
| Small account whose followers already skew Premium | Raw reach | Daily replies on bigger niche accounts plus original posts |
| Clip, meme or aggregation account | Originality, regardless of reach | Rebuild around your own commentary or footage, or accept you will not qualify |
| Former Revenue Sharing member | Reapplying under the new rules | Check Creator Studio, confirm your content passes the originality test |
| Political or government organization | Account type | Not eligible under the current terms |
Everything X rewards also builds a durable audience: original thinking, a clear niche and real conversations. Do that work and the thresholds become a side effect. For more platform-by-platform growth guides, see the Panel Follows blog.

Frequently asked questions
How many followers do you need to get monetized on X?
You need at least 500 verified followers, meaning followers with a checkmark, which mostly means Premium subscribers. Your total follower count does not matter. An account with 30,000 followers and few checkmarks among them can fail, while a smaller account with a professional audience can pass. You also need 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days.
How many impressions do you need to get monetized on X?
Under the Original Content Rewards program, you need at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within the last 90 days. Impressions on your replies are excluded, and impressions from non-verified users do not count. The older 5 million and 15 million figures you may see online belong to programs X has retired, so ignore guides that still quote them.
Can you get monetized on X without Premium?
No. You must hold an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, or a qualifying Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription, at the time you apply, and you must keep it to stay in the program. Premium Basic is not listed as a qualifying subscription. If your subscription lapses, you stop meeting the continuous eligibility conditions and can lose your payouts.
How much does X pay per 1,000 impressions?
X does not publish a rate per 1,000 impressions. Payouts are based on qualified impressions, meaning unique views from Premium users in the Home Timeline where at least half the post was visible. Earnings vary with your audience mix and formats, so the reliable way to know your rate is to divide each payout by your qualified impressions and track it over several cycles.
Do replies count toward X monetization?
No. X explicitly excludes reply impressions from the 500,000 eligibility threshold, and since qualified impressions are measured in the Home Timeline, replies viewed inside a conversation are unlikely to drive payouts either, although X does not spell that out. Replies still matter for growth, because thoughtful replies on larger accounts earn verified followers who later see your original posts.
Can you get monetized on X fast?
There is no legitimate shortcut. The impression requirement uses a rolling 90-day window, X reviews every application, and purchased or bot-driven engagement is excluded from qualified impressions and can get you removed. The fastest honest route is an audience of Premium users who read your original posts, which is why some niches reach the thresholds sooner than others.
Why was my X monetization application rejected?
Meeting the numbers does not guarantee entry, because X reviews every application. Likely causes include content that fails the originality test (reuploads, compilations, lightly edited clips), past policy violations, posts with helpful Community Notes, engagement solicitation or an ineligible account type. You get one appeal, and if it fails you can reapply after 42 days.
How do you get rid of monetization on X?
To leave the Original Content Rewards program, X says to message the @Subscriptions account for support. Canceling your Premium subscription also ends your eligibility, because an active subscription is a continuous requirement. Before you withdraw, check your pending balance in Creator Studio, since payouts have a $30 minimum and you should know what is still owed to you.
